Men's Basketball Falls in PSUAC Championship

This weekend, Penn State Wilkes-Barre's Men's Basketball team fell to Penn State Brandywine in the PSUAC Championship game, with a final score of 72-63. The offense struggled to find its groove in the game, shooting 38.5% from the field, and 25% from three. The defense also struggled to stop two main scorers for PSU Brandywine. Donte Winfield had a game high 25 points, adding 5 rebounds. The other key contributor on offense for PSU Brandywine was Terrence Brown with 22 points and 10 rebounds.

PSU Wilkes-Barre kept it close after the first half, and were only down 28-24. They were then able to make a strong comeback attempt, taking a 42-32 lead with 12:46 left in the game. But the offense went stagnant, and the defense was unable to hold the lead. PSU Brandywine came back to take a 52-50 lead with 4:26 left in the game, and they never relinquished the lead. Brandywine made their free throws to seal the victory.

The two leading scorer for PSU Wilkes-Barre was Levaugn Soules, with 12 points and 9 rebounds. Other key factors were Davughn Roberts and Kevin Silverberg. Roberts had 11 points, 6 rebounds and 2 steals, while Silverberg had 11 points (3-5 from three) and 3 rebounds. Tomir Gibbs contributed 10 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals, and Ameer Biddle had 9 points and 5 rebounds.

In the semi-finals game, which was on Saturday, PSU Wilkes-Barre defeated Penn State Greater Allegheny 67-59. Greater Allegheny was the #1 seed in the tournament. PSU Wilkes-Barre jumped out to a 40-22 lead after the 1st half, and never looked back after that. The offense was clicking, shooting 42.9% from the field, including 40% from behind the arc. The defense was on point as well, holding Greater Allegheny to 33.8% from the field and 25% from three.

Tomir Gibbs had a game high 20 points on 9-13 shooting from the field. He also added 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals. Jordan Williams had 12 points and 7 rebounds, while Davaughn Roberts contributed 10 points and 9 rebounds. For Greater Allegheny, Jordan Payne led the team in scoring with 18 points. Other key factors on offense were Kenneth Rouse with 14 points, 6 rebounds and 5 steals, and Curtis Newby with 11 points and 6 rebounds.

Penn State Wilkes-Barre finished the season at 18-9. They will be waiting to see if they get a bid into the USCAA tournament. Bid Day is on Tuesday, February 20th.
