Last night, Penn State Wilkes-Barre's Women's Basketball team's season came to an end in the first round of the PSUAC playoffs. The Lady Lions lost to Penn State Beaver on the road, 77-60. Our leading scorer for the game was Yasmine Montgomery with 16 points. Jackie Rabender contributed 14 points, and Raven Monet Kemper added 10 points.
The Lady Lions were the 6th seed in the PSUAC, winning the tiebreaker over Penn State Du Bois. Wilkes-Barre finished the season at 12-9, with a 7-8 conference record which includes the playoff loss. This season was a huge step up from last year. Last year, the team was 7-14, with a 2-12 record in conference play. The team played with a lot more intensity on both offense and defense this year. The team averaged 65.0 PPG, while only giving up 57.5 PPG to the opposing team.
Sophomore Raven Monet Kemper led the team this year with 12.4 PPG. As the Point Guard, she made sure the team got the best shot possible, but she was also aggressive in looking for her own shot. Sophomore Forward Miranda Pace led the team with 7.5 RPG, while Freshman Guard Yasmine Montgomery led the team with 2.8 APG in 13 games played. The team also had two players who were in the Top 10 statistical categories in the PSUAC. Senior Forward Jackie Rabender ranked 7th in the PSUAC with a 43.7 FG% on the season. Also, Raven Monet Kemper ranked 5th with a 34.5 3pt FG% this season.
This was Jackie Rabender's final season with the team, and she is the only Senior on the team. She ended her career with 368 points, 270 rebounds, 57 assists, and 69 steals. Her leadership was felt throughout the season, and she had a huge impact on the team this year. She will be missed next year on and off the court
Coach Ron Strothers and the team had a great rebound season after a very tough season last year. The team had a lot of strong performances during the season that they can build off of for next year. With only one player graduating this year, the team will bring back almost all of their key contributors for next season. If they are able to build off the success they had this season, they could have a very special season next year.
